Bristol Bicycles and Jake’s Bikes is an independent shop in central Bristol offering servicing & repairs and cycle hire, with a strong focus on excellent customer service. We also design and build practical, reliable hybrid bikes under our own Bristol Bicycles brand. Ultimately the aim of our work is to get more people cycling. We believe in making it easy, enjoyable, reliable, affordable and normal for anyone to cycle every day, without having to be an athlete, mountain biker or racing enthusiast. We are seeking to appoint a new staff member to our team of five.
This is a workshop role, and would suit someone with excellent attention to detail and several years of experience of servicing and repairing a wide range of bikes. The work is varied and includes undertaking all kinds of servicing and repairs on a wide variety of bikes. You will be expected to liaise with customers (usually by phone) to ensure they are kept up to date with the progress of their work. You will also be required to build Bristol Bicycles quickly and to a high standard.
Role: Bike Mechanic
Hours: Two days per week. Extra hours available for holiday cover.
Place of Work: Jake’s Bikes, 6A Haymarket Walk, Bristol BS1 3LN (between the Bear Pit roundabout and the Bus & Coach Station)
Contract: Freelance. 4 month period minimum, possible extension to 6 months.
Reports to: Manager
Wage: £8.00 to £9.00 per hour depending on skills and experience

Main duties and responsibilities
Servicing and Repairs
This is the most important aspect of the job, and will suit someone who enjoys problem-solving and doing a first class job quickly and efficiently. Duties include undertaking all levels of servicing and repairs on customers’ bikes.
Building new Bristol Bicycles
Assembling, setting up and test-riding our own-brand Bristol Bicycles ready for sale. Completing the associated paperwork. You will also be expected to do preparatory Bristol Bicycle work such as preparing batches of frames and wheels.
- Minimum of 3 years full-time experience (or equivalent) as a professional bike mechanic
- Up-to-date knowledge of bike component compatibilities and standards
- Pragmatic – happy to work on all kinds of bikes, happy to learn new ways of working
- Attention to detail
- Thorough and methodical, with a safety-first attitude
- Flexible, able to multi-task, and a fast worker
- Enjoy working as a member of a small team on a daily basis
- Able to self-manage and work independently when required
- Friendly, helpful, positive manner
- Cytech level 2 or equivalent qualification
